Abstract

This article brings reflections on the relevance of using built heritage, legacies and constituents of memories and stories of the black population in Rio de Janeiro – specifically in the region known as Madureira – in History Teaching. It argues that the black cultural heritage, which has been gradually evidenced due to the conceptual transformations of the term, can be an important pedagogical tool for an anti-racist education, as it represents links between history and memory and emphasizes the relationship between teach-ing and research at school. It does this based on research carried out by the History and Cultural Heritage Teaching Laboratory (LEEHPAC-PUC-Rio) in partnership with the Carmela Dutra Education Institute, whose theoretical framework is located in the field of Cultural History in dialogue with recent de-colonial approaches.
