Abstract

This article presents a reflection on the link between cinema, history and teaching, based on the critical analysis of the film Black Venus (2010) and the elements present in its plot and images. Based on the cinematographic work, discussions are raised about the African continent and its people, about concepts of “race”, scientific racism and colonialism, and about the social markers of gender and
sexuality, which appear interconnected in this production. The text is organized into three parts. The first focuses on the connection between cinema and history and the potential of cinema in the classroom; the second presents the film’s plot, examining its sociohistorical aspects that
emerge and can be addressed didactically; the third points out possibilities for using this film as a didactic tool in History teaching.
